As a university based research group, we are also actively involved in supporting the teaching activities of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Our equipment is available for students to use in laboratory experiments as well as for project work. Whilst this primarily is within the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering we offer faculty wide support.

With the range of equipment we have on offer in the laser laboratory we are able to offer a variety of laser based subjects for 3rd year projects base don the use of lasers to enhance the surface and structural properties of polymers, metals, alloys, ceramics, glasses and woods.

  • Generation of ordered micro- and nanostructures (e.g. LIPSS, Micropillars)
  • Modification of Biocompatible Solids for Microbiological Applications
  • Microfluidic Design
  • Surface Structuring of Materials for Wetting Applications
  • Optical Materials
  • Laser Machining (i.e. developing processes for the drilling, cutting and welding of materials)
